Pakistan sits on one of the world’s largest coal deposits. TharPak is a Group of leading multinational companies and educational institutions that have deep rooted experience in coal mining and clean coal technologies. Our goal is to transform the energy infrastructure of Pakistan.
The people of Pakistan are generous, industrious and hardworking.
Despite tremendous challenges, Pakistanis have managed to keep their economy moving by remitting funds from overseas, managing with limited infrastructure, and showing remarkable resiliency in the face of never ending power outages.
With nearly 205 million people, Pakistan has the 5th largest population in the world along with a rapidly growing youth bubble.
Meanwhile, Pakistan ranks 164th in the world when it comes to electricity capacity and consumption; Pakistan consumes 438 kWh compared to USA at 12,747 kWh per capita annually. This, despite the fact that Pakistan sits on one of the world’s largest coal deposits, where not a single ton has been mined so far.
Since the early 90’s, the People of Pakistan have been patiently waiting to see how and when the giant coal deposits of Thar will be tapped to unleash sustained economic growth.
Sadly, for a variety of reasons, this has not yet come to fruition. Without tapping into Thar coal and without doing so on a large scale, Pakistan will be unable to compete in the global economy against other emerging nations that are rapidly tapping coal as an affordable and reliable source of energy.
TharPak is a Group of leading multinational companies and educational institutions that have deep rooted experience in coal mining and clean coal technologies.
The Group has extensively analyzed publicly available data collected and studies conducted, on the Thar coal resource. Based on that analysis, the Group has developed a strategy that will methodically alter the course of accessing and exploiting the Thar coal deposit. The Group believes that its strategy, grounded on sound coal mine engineering concepts and coupled with its unique commercially proven Clean Coal technologies, will allow development of Thar at a very large scale. The scale of mining helps determine the per ton cost of the coal. The larger the coal mining output, the lower the per ton cost. This in turn, brings down cost of the electricity and other products, thereby generating affordable energy for Pakistan.
The Group members collectively are committed to addressing the environmental impact of TharPak’s activities from the outset.
To that end, all greenhouse gas and pollutant emissions will be mitigated to the maximum extent possible, while balancing costs. The unique grouping of technologies represented in the consortium offers the most efficient path to carbon capture, storage and future re-use for Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR).
